#PIAPOWER

On November 8th of 2018, 13-year-old Pía Urmaneta was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer by the name of Ewing Sarcoma. That same night, on November 8th, the #PíaPower movement was created.

On Pia's first return from the hospital, she was welcomed home to 1,000 folded origami cranes filling her bedroom walls, which symbolized that a wish will be granted such as recovery from illness. The movement is marked by pink pins labeled “Pía Power” in thin black letters that slightly overlap a white paper crane.

The movement was initially started by my family to show Pía the immense amount of support she had with people rooting for her recovery. Over time, it evolved into a way to inspire people to get through life’s hardships the way Pía did: With faith, positivity and a focus on the present moment.

These pins are now all over the world. The journey of Pía and its following has been documented on a family-run Instagram account, @thepíapowerYou can find #PíaPower pins at major landmarks all around the world, along with stickers all over cities, and inspiration in everyone who followed her journey.
